Getting a Proclamation Honoring National Day of Reason From Your Town, City, and/or State

(learn more below or download this information as a PDF here)

Instructions:

  1. Write a cover letter, and include Proclamation wording (see samples below).
  2. Try to present your request in person, even if to an assistant, leaving your cover letter and sample Proclamation with them.
  3. Mail a copy of cover letter and Proclamation. Get a delivery confirmation so you can prove the office received the request, especially considering you might want to follow up if a Proclamation is not issued.
  4. Follow up politely after allowing time for delivery.
  5. Whether your request is granted or denied, you may proceed to make this known by alerting the press. Either way, you have a story and resultant controversy. (Remember, controversy is the most important element to a news team.) See attached sample Press Release after one group’s Proclamation request was granted. Of course, you would write a different Press Release if the Proclamation request is not granted, including any response or refusal to respond.

Sample Wording for Cover Letter

[Mr. President/Governor/etc.] (use their names),

America has undergone many important changes in the past five years since you were first elected to the Presidency. We have seen our health care system reformed and the recovery of an economy badly affected by recession. However, our nation still faces many problems, such as ending the war in Afghanistan and securing equal rights for all citizens regardless of gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation. While the seriousness of these problems may inspire many to pray for a solution, we believe the way America will solve these issues is through the application of reason.

The National Day of Reason, recognized by millions of people across America since 2003, celebrates reason and the positive impacts it has on humanity. We believe rational discourse has the power to solve even the most challenging problems while cultivating intelligent, moral, and ethical interactions among people of varying backgrounds and beliefs.

Every year, events are held on the National Day of Reason that demonstrate the desire of secular Americans to help our fellow citizens and our nation as a whole. Community service events, such as food drives and group blood donations, are just some of the ways that we work to help those in need. As our movement grows and Americans become more willing to use reason to solve problems, our ability to help those in need will grow.

[Mr. President/Governor/etc.], you can support us in our efforts by promoting the idea that any individual can do good works without a belief in a deity. We therefore respectfully ask that you issue a proclamation recognizing the National Day of Reason on May 1st, 2014 in order to promote the importance of reason and to give secular Americans the same sort of governmental recognition that religious Americans receive on the National Day of Prayer. Regardless of our religious beliefs or lack thereof, we are all Americans.

Sincerely,

XXXXXX

Humanists of Rhode Island and The Secular Coalition for Rhode Island Co-Sponsor Request to Governor Chafee to Issue Proclamation for a Day of Reason

The Humanists of RI and The Secular Coalition for RI are pleased to announce pursuant to their request, that on April 30, 2013 Governor Lincoln D. Chafee issued a State of Rhode Island Gubernatorial Proclamation officially declaring May 2 the Day of Reason in Rhode Island. In doing this, Governor Chafee helps raise awareness throughout the State of Rhode Island of the importance of Reason as a guiding principal of our secular democracy. (See signed Proclamation below.)

Humanists of RI and the Secular Coalition of RI join with The National Day of Reason, a consortium of leaders from within the community of reason endorsing the idea of a National Day of Reason. This observance is held in parallel with the National Day of Prayer, on the first Thursday in May each year. The goal of this effort is to celebrate reason—a concept all Americans can support—and to raise public awareness about the persistent threat to religious liberty posed by government intrusion into the private sphere of worship.

Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism and other supernatural beliefs, affirms our ability and responsibility to lead ethical lives of personal fulfillment that aspire to the greater good of humanity. Humanists of Rhode Island are dedicated to good works and service projects that will best demonstrate our ideals.

The Secular Coalition for Rhode Island and the Secular Coalition for America share the common mission to increase the visibility of and respect for nontheistic viewpoints in the United States, and to protect and strengthen the secular character of our government as the best guarantee of freedom for all.
